A runny nose is when the mucus in the nasal passage has become loose and thin. It keeps dripping out of the nose constantly in such as embarrassing and annoying way

This usually happens when you have a cold or the nasal mucus becomes loosened for many reasons such as eating hot and spicy food, allergies, cold weather, hot shower/sauna, infection, etc.

Usually, when the body is attacked by a micro-organism, it increases the production of mucus to flush the virus out of the body system hence why we experience more mucus production when we have a cold.

How to stop a runny nose

Stay hydrated

It is very important that you remain well hydrated well when battling a runny nose because the thin mucus is the main method that the body moves the allergens and viruses out of the body and its production depends on enough water in the body.

When you are not hydrated enough, it can cause the production of thick mucus which causes congestion and breathing difficulties. It doesn’t naturally drian itself out of the nose.

The recommended amount is 2.7 liters for women and 3.5 liters for men.

Blow your nose

You should not let the mucus to keep ripping out of your nose by gently blowing it out one nostril at a time.

The faster the mucus drains out of your nose the better. this is because the mucus is the mechanism that the body uses to remove the viruses, irritants, and other harmful things from the body

Boost your immunity

Strengthen the body against invading micro-organisms by taking supplements such as vitamin C, black seed capsules, Zinc, etc. This helps shorten the duration of the infection/allergic reaction of the body.

Eat warm foods, warm teas, warm soups, and avoid all cold drinks and foods until you feel better. Also try to stay warm by wearing full covering clothes, socks, jackets, etc. Just stay warm to help boost your body’s defenses against these viruses and irritants

Chew on a ginger

When it becomes difficult to breathe, you should chew about 1-2 inches of ginger. If the ginger taste is too strong for you, you can dip it in honey to mask the taste and chew it till you can’t taste its spiciness anymore.

You will feel almost immediate relief. This is because ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the inflammations in the nasal passage making it easier to breathe.

rest well

When recovering from such a reaction, it is important that you avoid stress by resting well, getting adequate 8-9 hours of sleep a day, etc.

Being stress-free is important if you want to recover fast and maintain good health
